{"id":1510,"date":"2024-02-08T14:43:31","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T14:43:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wrahp.com\/?p=1510"},"modified":"2024-02-08T14:43:32","modified_gmt":"2024-02-08T14:43:32","slug":"stakeholders-dialogues-on-sgbv-empowering-change-in-lagos-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wrahp.com\/?p=1510","title":{"rendered":"STAKEHOLDERS\u2019 DIALOGUES ON SGBV: EMPOWERING CHANGE IN LAGOS STATE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"939\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/wrahp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1511\" style=\"width:681px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wrahp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image.png 939w, https:\/\/wrahp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-200x134.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women&#8217;s Rights and Health Project (WRAHP), through her project titled \u201cImproving Gender Equality and Protection from Sexual and Gender-Based Violence for Women and Girls in Lagos State through Capacity Building, Awareness-Raising, and Psychosocial Support Services,&#8221; with support from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), organized a one-day stakeholders\u2019 dialogue for key influencers of opinion. This event, held on January 31, 2024, brought together 60 influential individuals, including traditional rulers and opinion leaders, all committed to effecting change in their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alimosho LGA has the highest incidence of domestic violence, particularly SGBV, making it imperative to address this issue urgently. Data from the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) paints a stark reality, with over 4,800 reported cases between September 2021 and July 2022. Within this landscape, Alimosho emerges as a hotspot for both adult and child victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary objectives of this dialogue were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Enhancing Stakeholders\u2019 Understanding:<\/strong> To deepen stakeholders\u2019 comprehension of the Lagos State GBV Law, which prohibits all forms of sexual and gender-based violence. Participants explored effective strategies to enforce this law within the six adopted communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Capacity Building and Awareness-Raising:<\/strong> Equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, prevent, and respond to SGBV effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"777\" height=\"518\" src=\"https:\/\/wrahp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1512\" style=\"width:438px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wrahp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-1.png 777w, https:\/\/wrahp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-1-200x133.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The One Day Stakeholders\u2019 Dialogues on SGBV in Alimosho LGA unfolded as a dynamic and participatory event. Community leaders, influencers, and passionate advocates convened to address the pressing issue of sexual and gender-based violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WRAHP\u2019s ED Bose Ironsi, welcomed the participants and urged everyone to embrace their roles in combating SGBV within their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mrs. Bello Oluwakemi, the field coordinator from the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, engaged the audience through her presentation, \u201cShielding against Domestic &amp; Sexual Violence.&#8221;. She also navigated the provisions of the Protection Against Domestic Violence Law of Lagos State. Participants learned about reporting pathways, empowering them to take decisive action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"858\" height=\"573\" src=\"https:\/\/wrahp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1513\" style=\"width:250px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wrahp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-2.png 858w, https:\/\/wrahp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-2-200x134.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 858px) 100vw, 858px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the highlights was the panel session, which featured representatives from diverse sectors, including law enforcement, community leadership, and support services. Their insights shed light on the progress made and the collaborative efforts underway to address SGBV. From improved reporting mechanisms to enhanced community awareness, each stakeholder shared their organization&#8217;s contributions and commitments to combating SGBV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Echoes of Community Engagement around SGBV<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Police &#8211; Family<\/strong> Support Unit (FSU):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the training from WRAHP, we now follow the right procedures to ensure justice for SGBV survivors. When cases arise, we swiftly refer individuals to the Ireti Resource Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(<strong><em>Inspector Yemi Amoo, Focal Person, Family Support Unit, Igando Police Station<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Community Leaders:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Community leaders stand as beacons of change. Through WRAHP\u2019s training and activities, our consciousness has been shifted towards SGBV. The slogan \u201cSee something, say something, and do something immediately\u201d reverberates through our community as a call to action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>(<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Mr Rabiu Kazeem, CDC Chairman, Egbe Idimu<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC):<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We ensure swift response to immediate rescue survivors until the police arrive, and this has helped in ensuring immediate intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<strong><em>(<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Mr<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>s<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> Toriola Abiodun,<\/em><\/strong> Neighborhood Corps Superintendent, Head of Operations,<strong><em> First Responder<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>League of Imams:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the training we have received from WRAHP, we understand that cases of SGBV are not meant to be dismissed without proper intervention.\u00a0 We know that not all cases can be handled in the Mosque or at the police counter. We know when to guide individuals to the FSU\/Gender Unit, or WRAHP.
